Every December we build Christmas photo booths in hotel ballrooms, office lobbies, breweries, school gyms, and at least one boat. We have watched thousands of guests walk up to them, and we have learned what makes people line up and what makes them walk past.
This list covers both ends. The first half is ideas you can build yourself for a house party or a small office party. The second half is the bigger stuff: green screen worlds, video, and printed flipbooks, which is what we do for a living. Take what fits your party.
Before the ideas: the three things that make any booth work
- Light the faces, not the backdrop. This is the mistake we see most often. Fairy lights and a glowing tree behind your guests look beautiful in the room and turn every face into a shadow on camera. Put a soft main light in front of people, slightly above eye level, and let the backdrop glow behind them.
- Fill the whole frame. If the backdrop is narrower than the shot, every photo shows the edge of a curtain and the fire exit next to it. Frame a test shot with four people in it before guests arrive.
- Give people something to leave with. A booth that only saves photos to one person's phone gets used a few times. A booth that sends every photo to the guest, or prints it, gets used all night.
DIY Christmas photo booth backdrops
1. The garland wall. Layer real or faux garland across a wall, weave warm white lights through it, and add a few oversized ornaments at different heights. It looks expensive in photos, and garland hides the pins holding it up.
2. The wrapped-present wall. Wrap empty boxes of different sizes in two or three coordinated papers and stack them into a wall behind guests. It photographs well from any angle, and the boxes double as seating for group shots.
3. The fireplace scene. A mantel, stockings, a wreath, and an armchair. Guests instantly know what to do in front of it, which matters more than people think. A backdrop that suggests a pose gets better photos.
4. The tinsel or sequin curtain. Cheap, fast, and it catches light beautifully. Choose silver or gold rather than multicolor, and keep it at least three feet behind guests so it softens in the background.
5. The flocked tree line. Three or four flocked trees of different heights make a snowy forest in a corner. Add a small snow blanket on the floor and the whole frame reads as winter.
Props that actually get used
6. Fewer, better props. A table of forty props on sticks gets ignored. Six good ones get used: Santa hats, antler headbands, a few oversized glasses, one ugly sweater to pull on, and a sign or two with your party's name. Props people can wear beat props people have to hold.
7. A giant frame. An empty ornate frame, painted gold or wrapped in garland, gives groups something to squeeze into and makes every shot look composed.
8. An ugly sweater rack. A clothing rail of thrift-store Christmas sweaters in different sizes is the most reliably fun prop we know. It turns a photo into a costume change, and nobody minds looking ridiculous when everyone else is too.
9. A snow machine or snow toss. A small snow machine, or a basket of biodegradable snow for guests to throw on the count of three, adds movement to still photos. Check with the venue first; some do not allow anything that ends up on the floor.
Christmas photo booth ideas for bigger parties
This is where a photo corner turns into an experience. These are the setups we run at company holiday parties, school winter events, and large private celebrations.
10. Green screen snow globe. Guests step in front of a green screen and end up inside a snow globe, with snow falling around them. There is no physical backdrop to build, and it works in almost any room. See our green screen photo booth for how it runs.
11. Santa's sleigh ride on video. Our holiday showpiece. Guests are composited live into Santa's sleigh flying over a snowy landscape, and the clip lands on their phone before they walk away. Nobody climbs into anything; it is all green screen. It works because nobody has to perform. You watch yourself take off into a snowstorm and laugh, and that is the shot. 12. Winter world green screen photos. A ski lodge, a snowy village, the North Pole, a winter wonderland. Pick a few scenes and let guests choose. The strip above, from a company holiday party, shows the format: a custom holiday design wrapped around the photos with the party name on it.
13. Christmas flipbooks. Guests act out a 7-second scene and walk away about 90 seconds later with a printed, bound flipbook of themselves, with a cover designed for your party. It is the one photo booth idea where every guest leaves with something physical, and the books end up on desks and fridges long after December. More on how flipbooks work.
14. The 360 booth in a snow scene. Up to four guests stand on a platform while a camera arm sweeps around them and delivers a slow-motion video to their phones. Dress the platform with flocked trees and snow and it becomes a moving Christmas card. It is the highest-energy option here and it handles big crowds, with a new group about every minute. 15. Holiday AI portraits. Guests take one photo and get back a styled portrait of themselves as a vintage Christmas card, a snow-covered storybook illustration, or whatever style fits the party. It needs no green screen and very little floor space, which makes it a good fit for tight rooms. See AI photo booths.
16. Santa photos with instant delivery. If Santa is coming, put a photographer with him and deliver every photo straight to each family's phone, with prints on site. The line moves, parents stop juggling phones, and nobody leaves without the picture. Here is how we run Santa photo events.
17. A branded holiday template. For a company party, put the company's name and the year on every photo in a design that looks like a holiday card rather than a logo slide. Those photos get shared, and every share carries the party with it.
18. Roaming holiday photos. At a seated dinner, a booth in the corner misses most of the room. A roaming photographer works the tables and every guest automatically gets every photo of themselves. That is what SpotMyPhotos does.
Which idea fits your party

Frequently Asked Questions
At minimum: a backdrop that fills the whole frame, soft light on faces from the front, a camera or phone on a fixed stand at chest height, and a few props on a nearby table. The most common mistake is lighting the backdrop instead of the guests. String lights behind people look lovely in person and turn faces into silhouettes on camera, so put your main light in front of them.
Something with texture and depth that fills the frame edge to edge: a wall of garland with warm lights, a flocked tree line, a sequin or tinsel curtain, a wrapped-present wall, or a fireplace scene. Leave three to four feet between the backdrop and your guests so it reads as a scene rather than a flat wall. For bigger events, a green screen replaces the backdrop entirely with any winter world you want.
A DIY phone setup works in about 8 by 8 feet. A professional green screen photo setup is optimal at about 10 by 10 feet, and a flipbook studio or 360 video booth at about 14 by 14 feet. Those are comfortable working sizes rather than hard minimums, and smaller rooms are usually workable with some planning.
The ones that give colleagues a reason to jump in together and walk away with something. Green screen scenes like Santa's sleigh or a snow globe work well because nobody has to perform. A flipbook with a holiday cover gives every guest a printed keepsake for their desk. A 360 booth suits larger, louder parties because up to four people ride at once.
