Dressing for the Occasion
One of the most common questions guests ask before an event is simply: what should I wear? The right answer depends entirely on the type of event and the venue. Here is a quick guide to help you land it, whether you are attending a black-tie gala or a backyard celebration.
Tips by Event Type
Weddings and High-End Events
For weddings, galas, and other formal occasions, a safe and sharp default is black on black: dark slacks and a button-up shirt, or a suit. When in doubt, dress one notch more formal than you think you need to.
Corporate Events and Conferences
Business casual is usually the right call: slacks with a collared shirt, or a smart dress. If the event is a client-facing or executive function, lean toward business formal.
Casual Celebrations
A nice shirt with slacks or dark jeans works for most casual events. One thing to keep in mind: many golf resorts and country clubs do not allow jeans and require a collared shirt, so check the venue's dress code before you go.
